In John Mason’s Book, An Enemy Called Average, he has 52 Nuggets to live by. One for each week, for an entire year.
Nugget # 5 Don’t Ask Time Where It’s Gone; Tell It Where To Go
All humans are created equal in the fact that we are all granted the same amount of time each day – 24hrs. What we choose to do with this time, with each day, is where we can create the biggest IMPACT for ourselves and for others.
If you want to be above “Average,” if you want to stand out, accomplish your goals, then you need to harness the value of YOUR time. Look back at the time you have spent over the last 4 weeks.
Did you make progress?
Did you get better?
Are you closer to your goals then you were 4 weeks ago?
It’s time to narrow the time focus for each and every day.
Start with the two most vulnerable times in your day – first thing in the morning and before you go to sleep. Plan your day the night before. Ask yourself, how will you use your time when you wake up? Start the day with positive and productive actions. Reevaluate how you did at the end of the day.
Keep the following message on your phone and look at each day before you get out of bed:
WHAT WILL TODAY BRING?
THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF A NEW DAY.
I HAVE BEEN GRANTED THIS DAY TO USE AS I WILL.
I CAN WASTE IT OR USE IT FOR GOOD
WHAT I DO TODAY IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE
I AM EXCHANGING A DAY OF MY LIFE FOR IT.
WHEN TOMORROW COMES THIS DAY WILL BE GONE FOREVER,
LEAVING IT IN IT’S PLACE SOMETHING I HAVE TRADED FOR IT.
I WANT IT TO BE A GAIN, NOT A LOSS; SUCCESS, NOT FAILURE;
IN ORDER THAT I SHALL NOT REGET THE PRICE I PAID FOR IT
BECAUSE THE FUTURE IS JUST A WHOLE STRING OF NOWS.
