Fear.
What are you really afraid of?
Is it failure?
Is it success?
Is it the unknown?
Is it the fear of working so hard and not achieving what you set out to do?
Is it mortality?
The Wikipedia definition of fear is this:
Fear is a feeling induced by perceived danger or threat that occurs in certain types of organisms, which causes a change in metabolic and organ functions and ultimately a change in behavior, such as fleeing, hiding, or freezing from perceived traumatic events. Fear in human beings may occur in response to a specific stimulus occurring in the present, or in anticipation or expectation of a future threat perceived as a risk to body or life. The fear response arises from the perception of danger leading to confrontation with or escape from/avoiding the threat (also known as the fight-or-flight response), which in extreme cases of fear (horror and terror) can be a freeze response or paralysis.
Many times it’s fear that causes the individual to quit or give up. It’s not the physical, it’s the mental stress of not succeeding, which often derails their efforts and focus, thus ultimately causes us to go from I CAN… TO… I CAN’T… And then it happens…we quit.
Was it too hard?
Was it “not fair?”
Stop feeling sorry for yourself.
Fear, Failure, Self-doubt.
Leave it.
Focus on the process not the outcome.
In Robert O’Neill’s book the Operator, an Instructor pulled him aside just before HELL week in BUD/s training, where most recruits end up quitting and not becoming Navy SEALS, said:
“You are about to go to war for the first time and the enemy is all your doubts, all your fears, and everyone you know back home who said you couldn’t do this. Keep your head down and keep moving forward, and no matter what, never quit, and you’ll be fine.” Out of 200 recruits, he was one of 35 left to finish and graduate.
Here’s your IMPACT action item to do this week.
Motivation & self help. You are either staring at it right now or holding it in your hand. It’s right at your fingertips. You have the ability to listen to podcasts, like Jim Harshaw’s Success Through Failure, while you drive, exercise or before you go to bed or when you wake up. Watch an inspiring message on YouTube everyday. Motivating messages will resinate in your brain. Try it. For at least a month.
At the end of the day, someone has to be the best. Someone has to succeed. Why not you?
We are all the same. Humans with beating hearts and functional brains. It’s not that people don’t do the right things.
They don’t do the right things long enough. Stay the course. Don’t quit.
We are all strong, but sometimes we need an emotional boost to reengage our purpose.
Below are 2 emotional speeches from guys that never gave up, kept fighting to the end and IMPACTED millions.
